Sidney Lumet, the film director of classics such as 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Network and Serpico, died in New York yesterday. He was 86.
His stepdaughter, Leslie Gimbel, said Lumet died of lymphoma at his home in Manhattan.
Lumet, born in Philadelphia in June 1924, was one of the leading film directors of the 20th Century, directing more than 40 movies.

Lumet once said: ‘While the goal of all movies is to entertain, the kind of film in which I believe goes one step further.
‘It compels the spectator to examine one facet or another of his own conscience. It stimulates thought.’

He said at the time: 'I wanted one, damn it, and I felt I deserved one.'
During his career, he directed actresses in Oscar-winning performances, including Ingrid Bergman (Murder On The Orient Express), and three of the stars of his 1974 film Network - Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch and Beatrice Straight.

He leaves two daughters, Amy and Jenny, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Leading the tributes was actor Jim Carrey, who took to his Twitter after hearing the news of Lumet's passing.
