James Carrey Biography

James Eugene Carrey (born January 17, 1962), best known as Jim Carrey, is a BAFTA-nominated and two-time Golden Globe Award-winning Canadian-American actor and a stand-up comedian. He is probably best known for his manic and slapstick performances in comedy films such as Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty.

Carrey has also achieved critical success in dramatic roles in films such as The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Yes Man and I Love You Phillip Morris.

Early life

Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, the son of Kathleen, a homemaker, and Percy Carrey, a musician and accountant. He has three older siblings, John, Patricia, and Rita. The family was Catholic and of part French Canadian ancestry (as the original surname was Carré).

After his family moved to Scarborough, Ontario when Carrey was 14, he attended the Blessed Trinity Catholic School in North York for two years, enrolled at Agincourt Collegiate Institute, Scarborough’s oldest high school for another year, then briefly attended Northview Heights Secondary School for the remainder of his high school career (altogether, he spent three years in grade 10).

Carrey lived in Burlington, Ontario, for eight years and attended Aldershot High School. In a Hamilton Spectator interview (February 2007), Carrey remarked, “If my career in show business hadn’t panned out I would probably be working today in Hamilton, Ontario at the Dofasco steel mill.”

In 1979, under the management of Leatrice Spevack, Carrey started doing stand-up comedy at Yuk Yuk’s in Toronto, where he rose to become a headliner in February 1981, shortly after his 19th birthday. One reviewer in the Toronto Star raved that Carrey was “a genuine star coming to life
.”
The Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
The Comedy Store in Los Angeles
In the early 1980’s, Carrey moved to Los Angeles and started working at The Comedy Store, where he was noticed by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield liked Carrey’s performance so much that he signed Carrey to open Dangerfield’s tour performances.

Carrey then turned his attention to the film and television industries, auditioning to be a cast member for the 1980–1981 season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Carrey was not selected for the position at that time although he did host the show in May 1996.

Joel Schumacher had him audition for a role in D.C. Cab, though in the end, nothing ever came of it.duckfactorycover

His first lead role on television was Skip Tarkenton, a young animation producer on NBC’s short-lived The Duck Factory, airing from April 12, 1984, to July 11, 1984, and offering a behind-the-scenes look at the crew that produced a children’s cartoon.

Carrey continued working in smaller film and television roles, which led to a friendship with fellow comedian Damon Wayans, who co-starred with Carrey as a fellow extraterrestrial in 1989’s Earth Girls Are Easy.

livingcolorWhen Wayans’ brother, Keenen, began developing a sketch comedy show for Fox called In Living Color, Carrey was hired as a cast member, whose unusual characters included masochistic safety inspector Fire Marshall Bill (whose dangerous “safety tips” were the target of censors and watchdog groups who saw the character as a dangerous example for naive younger viewers), and masculine female bodybuilder Vera de Milo.

His on-screen antics caught the eye of Hollywood.

Filmscoppermountain

Carrey made his film debut in Rubberface (1983), which was released as Introducing … Janet. Later that year, he won the leading role in Damian Lee’s Canadian skiing comedy Copper Mountain, which included his impersonation of Sammy Davis Jr. Since the film had a less than one hour runtime consisting largely of musical performances by Rita Coolidge and Rompin’ Ronnie Hawkins, it was not considered a genuine feature film.

A few years later, Carrey saw his first major starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten, in the role of Mark Kendall, a teen oncebittenvirgin pursued by a 400-year old female vampire (played by Lauren Hutton).

After supporting roles in films such as Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Earth Girls Are Easy (1988), and The Dead Pool (1988), Carrey did not experience true stardom until starring in the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by critics, and earned Carrey a 1995 Golden Raspberry Award nomination as Worst New Star.

However, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was a huge commercial success, as were his two other starring roles from that year: The Mask and Dumb and Dumber.
riddler
Jim Carrey as the Riddler in Batman Forever.

In 1995, Carrey appeared as the Riddler in Batman Forever and reprised his role as Ace Ventura in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Both films were successful at the box office and earned Carrey multi-million-dollar paychecks.

Carrey earned $20 million for his next film, The Cable Guy (directed by Ben Stiller), a record sum for a comedy actor. The attention drawn to the paycheck, coupled with some negative reviews, and the film’s dark sensibility, all contributed to the film’s mediocre earnings. Carrey then quickly rebounded with the successful (and lighter) Liar Liar, a return to his trademark comedy style.

Carrey took a chance (and a slight pay cut) to play a more serious role to star in The Truman Show (1998), a change of pace that led to forecasts of Academy Award nominations. Although the movie was nominated for three awards, Carrey did not personally receive a nomination, leading him to joke that “it’s an honor just to be nominated … oh no,” during his appearance on the Oscar telecast.

However, for his performance in The Truman Show, Carrey did win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and an MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance. That same year, Carrey appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on the final episode of Garry Shandling’s The Larry Sanders Show, making an impression by ripping deliberately into Shandling’s character.

andykaufman
As Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon.
In 1999, Carrey won the role of comedian Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon. Other actors, including Edward Norton, were interested in the role, but Carrey’s audition, including an act with the bongo drums Kaufman used in his performances, helped him to be cast as Kaufman.

Despite critical acclaim for the role, he was not nominated for an Academy Award, but again won a Best Actor Golden Globe award for the second consecutive year.

In 2000, Carrey reteamed with the Farrelly Brothers, who had directed him in Dumb and Dumber, in their comedy, Me, Myself & Irene, about a state trooper with multiple personalities who romances a woman played by Renée Zellweger. The film grossed $24 million on its opening weekend and $90 million by the end of its domestic run.

In 2003, Carrey reteamed with Tom Shadyac for the financially successful comedy Bruce Almighty. Earning over $242 million in the U.S. and over $484 million worldwide, this film became the second highest grossing live-action comedy of all time.

eternalsunshinespotlessmind
Carrey and Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
His performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004 earned high praise from critics, who again predicted that Carrey would receive an Oscar nomination. That didn’t happen but the film did win for Best Original Screenplay, and costar Kate Winslet received an Oscar nomination for her performance. Carrey was however nominated for a sixth Golden Globe for his performance in the film.

In 2004, he played the villainous character Count Olaf in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which was based on the popular children’s novels of the same name.

In 2005, Carrey starred in a remake of Fun with Dick and Jane, playing Dick, a husband who loses his job after his company goes bankrupt.

In 2007, Carrey reunited with Joel Schumacher, director of Batman Forever, for The Number 23, a psychological thriller co-starring Virginia Madsen and Danny Huston. In the film, Carrey plays a man who becomes obsessed with the number 23, after finding a book about a man with the same obsession.

withewan
Carrey with his costar in I Love You Phillip Morris, Ewan McGregor.
In 2008, Carrey made two films. He spoke for the elephant Horton in Horton Hears a Who!, an animated movie based on Dr. Seuss’s book, and he portrays the gay Steven Russell in the remarkable life story I Love You Phillip Morris.

Coming up are two films, A Christmas Carol, which is based on the well known book by Charles Dickens and Ripley’s Believe it or Not, which is based on Robert Ripley’s life.

Carrey has stated that he finds the prospect of reprising a character to be considerably less enticing than taking on a new role. The only time he has reprised a role was with Ace Ventura. (Sequels to Bruce Almighty, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask have all been released without Carrey’s involvement.)

Despite having a 20-year career with no Academy Award nominations, Jack Nicholson (who in the first 20 years of his career had five) has named Carrey the “Jack Nicholson” of the next generation.

Personal life

Carrey has been married twice, first to former actress and Comedy Store-waitress Melissa Womer, with whom he has a daughter, Jane Erin Carrey (b. September 6, 1987 in Los Angeles County). They were married on March 28, 1987, and were officially divorced in late 1995.

After his separation from Womer, Carrey began dating his Dumb and Dumber co-star Lauren Holly. They were married on September 23, 1996 but the marriage lasted less than a year.

Carrey then dated actress Renée Zellweger, whom he met on the set of Me, Myself & Irene, but their relationship ended in a broken engagement in December 2000. During 2004, Carrey dated his massage therapist Tiffany O. Silver.

In the May 2006 issue of Playboy Magazine (p. 48), it was mentioned that he has dated model Anine Bing.

In December 2005, Carrey began dating actress/model Jenny McCarthy but they did not make their relationship public until June 2006. She announced on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on April 2, 2008 that the two are now living together, but have no plans to marry, as they do not need a “piece of paper.”

Carrey has a chipped tooth; for his role in Dumb and Dumber, he simply removed the tooth cap.

Carrey is a vegetarian.

He attended a Presbyterian Church with his family in the early 1990s.

His favorite band is death metal band Cannibal Corpse, who made a cameo appearance in Ace Ventura.

Carrey received U.S. citizenship on October 7, 2004, and now maintains dual citizenship of the U.S. and his native Canada, where he has had a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto since 1998.

He went public about his bouts with depression in a November 2004 interview on 60 Minutes.

Carrey has also made calls to the public, by way of Internet videos, to try to bring attention to the political suppression in Burma, especially of Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, whom he describes as a hero of his.

MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS Review

mr-poppers-penguins-movie-image-jim-carrey-slice-01
Your kids are probably going to love Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  I saw it an audience filled with kids and their parents, and the kids laughed throughout.  They laughed when the penguins farted.  They laughed when the penguins pooped.  They laughed when the penguins fell down.  They laughed when Jim Carrey made a funny face.  The movie easily walks beneath the low bar set by what passes for family films and if you want to keep your kids amused for two hours and can’t find a shiny object, then Mr. Popper’s Penguins fits the bill.  There’s nothing I can say against this film that makes it any less of a joy to kids who ask nothing more than funny faces, fart jokes, and slapstick.  Instead, I’m fascinated by the film’s unsettling subtext..
I’ve never read the book Mr. Popper’s Penguins, but I have to pray that it’s not as soulless and warped as the movie.  Tom Popper (Carrey) is standard-issue workaholic dad who doesn’t spend enough time with his kids because he’s so focused on his career and making lots of money.  Naturally, his career is shallow and makes him a lot of money, but Carrey already did Neglectful Lawyer Dad in Liar Liar, so now he’s Neglectful Real Estate Dad.  But we can always throw some daddy issues on that fire and it turns out that Tom Sr. was always away on an expedition and Tom Jr. grew to resent his father.  Then Popper the Elder passes away and leaves his son a penguin as if it were another souvenir from one of his trips.  It’s a live creature that needs care and attention, but whatever.  When Tom tries to return the penguin, he ends up getting five more due to a miscommunication (over a language barrier!  Oh, when will those silly foreigners learn to speak English?).
mr-poppers-penguins-movie-image-jim-carrey-02
Mr. Popper struggles to get rid of the penguins but then his emotionally distant kids see the adorable animals, start warming up to their father, his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) starts to re-evaluate him, and he grows to like the penguins because they’re adorable.  And they even serve different functions!  There’s Main Penguin, Farty Penguin, Loud Penguin (who is seriously called “Loudy”), Huggy Penguin, Biting Penguin, and Slapstick Penguin.  Need a slapstick joke?  Let’s go, Slapstick Penguin!  Has been almost 15 minutes since the last poop joke?  You’re up, Farty Penguin!
Obviously, Popper will learn a valuable lesson, realize that his job is awful, become more of a family man, and it’s all thanks to those darn penguins.  Kids don’t know these are the beats of the generic family film and they don’t care.  But I have seen them and the laziness of the script is magnificent.  You could take almost any generic live-action family comedy from the last thirty years, change a few names and plot devices, and boom: You have Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  What’s remarkable is you have three credited screenwriters on this thing.  And you know that at least one of them got the note: “Needs more penguin shit,” which is how you get a scene where Carrey squeezes the shit out of a penguin.  That happens in this movie.  Popper picks up a penguin, holds him over the toilet, squeezes the penguin, and a bunch of shit falls into the bowl.  You know, for kids.
mr-poppers-penguins-movie-image-jim-carrey-03
You get the sense that Carrey couldn’t care less.  It’s almost as if he understands that he’s going to be upstaged by adorable penguins so rather than put in his usual manic-comic performance, he just sits back, let’s the energy drain from the scene, and waits for the next time he can use his character’s forced catchphrase, “Yeabsolutely.”  Kids won’t care, but I can hear Carrey telling someone “I got to say ‘Alrighty then’ in Ace Ventura, and ‘B-e-a-utiful’ in Bruce Almighty and both of those movies were hits.  Give me a new affirmative catchphrase.”
Kids won’t notice that, their parents probably won’t notice that, but I’m a critic so I notice that.  I can’t shoot myself with a memory bullet and make this movie a fresh and exciting experience.  What I can do is notice is its depressing subtext.
One of the film’s villains is a zookeeper played by Clark Gregg (the other villain is a tenant who hates Popper and who could have been excised from the film completely; he adds nothing to the movie) .  The zookeeper tells Popper that it takes expertise and the proper environment to take care of Penguins.  Popper is initially ecstatic that someone is coming to take the penguins off his hands, but then his kids see the penguins, his son assumes they’re a birthday present, Popper is so desperate for his kids’ affection that he lies and says they’re presents, and now he can’t hand them over to the zookeeper because if he does, his kids won’t like him.  Parenting lesson 1: Buy off your kids.  It will in no way backfire and turn them into spoiled, entitled brats.
mr-poppers-penguins-movie-image-jim-carrey-01
So rather than having Popper lay his foot down and explain that the responsible thing to do is to turn the penguins over to someone who knows how to care for them, Popper makes his luxury apartment really cold, brings in some snow, uses the Google and the YouTubes to learn about penguin care, and voila!  Now the penguins will be cared for.  When one of their eggs doesn’t hatch, Potter feels like a failure and decides to give the penguins up to Clark Gregg.  But then his kids don’t like him!  And his ex-wife stops falling for him!  Time to suit up and get those penguins back!
The film then tries to explain that Clark Gregg was really up to no good.  Was he planning to sell the penguins to a private collector?  Was he going to turn them into food for eccentric rich people?  Nope.  He was going to split them up and send them to different zoos so his zoo, the New York Zoo (not a fly-by night fake zoo, but one of the world’s most famous zoos), could get other animals in return.  That is his unforgivable crime and it is better that the penguins go and live with amateur penguin enthusiast Tom Popper because they wuv him.
mr-poppers-penguins-movie-image-jim-carrey-04
What’s interesting about Mr. Popper’s Penguins is that usually in this protect-the-animal sub-genre, the villain tends to be a giant corporation, a hunter, or a selfish, wealthy individual who wants the animal for his own personal amusement, and it’s up to the heroes to protect the animals and put them in the wild or a place where they’ll be cared for properly.  The hero of Mr. Popper’s Penguins is the selfish, wealthy individual who needs these penguins to get over his daddy issues and win his kids’ affections.
I think the values the film promotes are perverse.  It says as long as you’re wealthy and have an Internet connection, you’re the best caretaker for anything and people with expertise can go screw and those sneaky bastards probably have their own agenda anyway.  It says “Hey kids!  If your parents really loved you, they would always give into your demands.  If they don’t, pout and be bratty, and that should do the trick.”  It says to children of divorce that dad needs to stop being a workaholic and just take mom on a date and the marriage will be fixed.  And maybe kids will pick up on that.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Director: Michel Gondry
Cast: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Victor Rasuk, Ellen Pompeo
Genre: Comedy
Rated: R
NEWeternal-sunshine-carrey

How to review a movie that makes it a point to rebel against all the standards that critics use to analyze a film? Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind is the newest mind-fuck from Charlie Kaufman, writer of Human Nature, Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. Kauffman has already carved a niche for himself, becoming notorious for his twisted and tangled meta-films, his rebellions against the concept of linear, coherent plotlines. His films force the audience into a much more active state then one is used to when one goes to the movies; he forces his audience to stay involved, to run alongside his subconscious, trying to keep up with the twists and turns of his psyche. His movies can be simultaneously exhausting, frustrating and incredibly exhilarating. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is no exception; but this movie diverges from the typical Kaufman formula in that it is charming, optimistic, and dare I say, heartwarming as well.

Mr Popper's Penguins is far-fetched but refreshingly perky

Film review: Mr Popper's Penguins has some zingy one-liners and thankfully keeps Jim Carrey's gurning to a minimum.

Jim Carrey Mr Popper's Penguins Mr Popper's Penguins will suit those who love penguins but loathe Jim Carrey
Love penguins but loathe Jim Carrey? Don’t let that p-p-put you off this refreshingly perky family comedy, particularly when you get to enjoy said penguins pooping in his face.

The far-fetched set-up casts Carrey as Tom Popper, a recently divorced workaholic just waiting for a shipment of penguins (a legacy from his explorer father) to invade his swanky New York bachelor pad and teach him the meaning of family togetherness.

Based on an obscure (to British audiences) US children’s book, the script boasts some surprisingly zingy one-liners. Carrey’s gurning is mercifully muted – not least because his rubbery features are starting to lose their elasticity – while Angela Lansbury pops up to prove she’s  not dead yet.

However, the real stars are, obviously, the cute little  flappy ones. ‘Penguin’ is  now firmly atop my Christmas list.

Jim Carrey has gone viral with a new video blog where he confesses his admiration and love for 22-year old actress Emma Stone.
The stunt is getting rave reviews from fans and bloggers as Carrey shows his ‘true nature’ in the video. Although we are used to the lighter side of Carrey’s alter-ego in the movies, the actor shows his sensitive side like never before in the post.

Jim Carrey's karaoke version of Radiohead's 'Creep' goes viral - video

What the world needs now is ... well, one thing we sure don't need now is another variation of  "A Christmas Carol."

Jim Carrey lends his voice to this technically precise but hollow retelling of the Scrooge story

Yet every other year we get a re-imagining/remake/reboot/retelling of the Charles Dickens' story, and darned if the template doesn't hold up under the most torturous of circumstances.

Like casting Matthew McConaughey as the Scrooge character.

The latest, "Disney's A Christmas Carol," offers a duel-edged distinction. It's in 3-D and told via motion capture technology.

That's the same approach "Carol" writer/director Robert Zemeckis took with "The Polar Express" and "Beowulf," two films featuring characters whose eyes seemed to lack the spark of humanity.

1 JimCarrey.com – more Eternal Sunshine than Living Color

The rubber faced comedian Jim Carrey has just launched JimCarrey.com, a new personal web site documenting his career and based on his slapstick comedy stylings it’s an experience that is nothing like what I expected. The visual design is at times like something out of a Salvador Dali painting with elements of a Tim Burton movie sprinkled in. It is extremely visual with minimal navigation and a lot hidden content and interactions sprinkled throughout the extensive video and animation. One example of this is the Ace Ventura headed bird that is his Twitter link found on every page that spouts his latest Tweets one word at a time. I have to honestly say that this is the first celebrity site I have ever wanted to spend any time with and I applaud him for actually creating something that gives some credit to his fans for being able to enjoy something more challenging that the usual headshot laden celebrity dribble.

We Love Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey's loves: Anastasia Vitkina to Renee Zellweger

jim-carrey-love-life-getty.jpgNews broke Wednesday that comedian/actor Jim Carrey has a new squeeze - Anastasia Vitkina, a New York City student who previously dated his NoLita restaurant partner David Shoonmaker. Vitkina is just one in a long line of beautiful women Carrey has had on his arm.

The funnyman married Melissa Womer, an actress and Comedy Store waitress, in 1987. It is with Womer that Carrey has his only child, Jane. The pair later divorced in 1995. Jane made them grandparents in 2010 when she and musician husband Alex Santana gave birth to a baby boy.

I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS Clip - Starring Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, and Rodrigo Santoro

Written by Matt Goldberg

I've heard from someone who has seen the upcoming Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor film "I Love You Phillip Morris" that it's gay.  Reeeally gay.  And I'm all for that.  Films like this let me know that just because Carrey does the occasional "Yes Man" for the easy paycheck, he's still challenging himself with material like this.

However, I couldn't get anything more specific on the "gay".  Are we talking Richard Simmons-gay?  19th-century gay?  Enola Gay?  From the looks of this clip, I'm thinking "Gay-as-dysfunctional-as-any-straight-couple," because you could replace Ewan's character, Phillip Morris, with a woman and the scene would still work and be just as entertaining.  I have high hopes for this flick and hopefully there will be a good word out of Sundance when it screens there next week.

Check out the new clip:

Jim Carrey: Love Doesn’t Work For Him!

Love definitely does not work for American actor Jim Carrey. Every member in the audience will swear by the fact that Jim Carrey is best as a comedian, not the guy in love with another guy in his latest movie `I Love You Phillip Morris'. Well, we do agree with the fact that there is a whole lot of comedy in the film but Jim Carrey looks totally out of place in scenes where he will have to seriously play the guy in love. A critic has gone to the extent of commenting that Jim Carrey is an actor who has strived hard to attract attention by his comic acts, but has failed because he only ends up overacting!

Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey Still Totally in Love

jenny-jim.jpg
Awwhhh… I just love these two together. You just know they’re going to get hitched.
It seems the romance is still going strong between Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey. Jenny recently took Jim to her hometown Chicago where she showed him around town and took him to visit her childhood home.
The funny couple went up to the doorstep and asked if they could come inside and revisit some old memories. The current owners of the home, who didn’t know who Jenny and Jim were, allowed them inside.
Jenny shared special moments she had in the house. She says, “I took him in my old bedroom, my basement – where I had my first kiss from my first boyfriend.”

Film Review: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor Make Unique Couple in ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’

CHICAGO – John Requa and Glenn Ficarra’s “I Love You Phillip Morris” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival nearly two years ago and was released internationally so long ago that it’s out on DVD in most markets around the world. After financial difficulties plagued the first company intent on stateside distribution, the movie sat on a shelf and most of us assumed it would be making its U.S. debut on a round shiny disc. Surprisingly, after months of uncertainty, Roadside Attractions is releasing the film in theaters this week, right in the heart of awards season, and it’s not hard to see why they have confidence in the project, but it’s just as easy to see why it hasn’t played in theaters earlier.

Top 10 Films prepares for 31 Days of Horror

Howard Storm’s strange but alluring tale of vampire’s chasing virgin blood is like the celluloid lovechild of an unfortunate sexual encounter between Porky’s and The Lost Boys. Yet, while it tries dearly to comment on eighties youth culture in the guise of modern vampire mythology, it ultimately fails at both. Two years after the release of Once Bitten, Joel Schumacher would get it spot-on with his take on the teen-fuelled, modern vampire genre with The Lost Boys, because his film was much more clearly orientated – that and the fact it had a cracking script and great soundtrack. Released the same year as Once Bitten, Fright Night worked a whole lot better because it forgot about silly, idealist pretensions and went to town on the conventions of a genre that were begging to be deconstructed. However, Once Bitten does still have something of an attraction – Jim Carrey. Yes, I said Kim Carrey! In one of his earliest film roles he shows real signs of the manic comic performer he would become. And, without any doubt, mature temptress Lauren Hutton strutting around trying to find a legal virgin to seduce is nothing short of every teenager’s dream, and the youth sex culture presented to us makes for some quite hilarious comic moments.
vampires, jim carrey, once bitten, film review,
The film begins with Sebastian (Cleavon Little) taking a glass of blood to the Countess (Lauren Hutton) who comments, much like a wine tasting, “Austrian Peasant. Early 1700s. O-positive.” We then learn that Halloween is only a week away and that if she does not find a virgin before the week is out, she will lose her youthful looks. She sends out her band of merry bloodsuckers but they keep coming back empty handed, claiming the best they could find was an eleven-year-old. Eventually though, she happens across Mark Kendall (Carrey). Mark’s girlfriend still hasn’t put out after a long relationship and he languishes in a sexless world battling raging hormones. Deciding to head to the city in a desperate attempt to find a woman who’ll take his virginity, Mark falls into the arms of the Countess. For some reason, she must drink his blood three times before Halloween arrives to ensure her survival. In doing so, Mark will become a vampire himself. But will he realise what’s going on before it’s too late?
Sebastian, the Countess’ butler, driver and general slave asks her, “Did we get up of the wrong side of the coffin this evening?” which provides a good clue as to the direction of the humour. It isn’t as if Once Bitten isn’t funny, it’s more a fact that nothing feels quite right. The balance between what is ostensibly a vampire survival guide coupled with bawdy teen sex comedy never reaches the potential it could have, and where individual scenes are enjoyable on their own, as a whole they’re less fulfilling. The Lost Boys, for example, didn’t have trouble mixing comedy with the mythology of the vampire legend – but who could resist the charm of the Goonies meets Near Dark plot, something Once Bitten simply does not have. Odd visual glimpses (which the director will probably claim mean something), strange incoherent plot points, the Countess’ terribly contrived and uninteresting gang of bloodsuckers, and a couple of awful dream sequences have you scratching your head. They’re just out of place – perhaps director Storm was trying too hard?
vampire, twilight, fright night, lost boys,
On the plus side, the sex gag running through the film with people constantly finding places to acquaint themselves with the opposite sex – from cars to coffins – is very funny, and Mark’s testosterone-fuelled friends Thomas Ballatore and Skip Lackey are great in their desperate plight to lose their virginity (‘I’m a mature person, you’re a mature person. Let’s just throw away our inhibitions and get down to what we really want to do!’).
Jim Carrey shows off his talents well before the likes of The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective came along (the films that projected him into the $20 million a movie bracket), especially in a dance scene where he plays his leg like a guitar. Though the scene is another one that feels strangely out of place. It’s actually so entertaining that even though it feels like another film altogether you just have to give Storm credit for raising a smile. This little dance-off ends up being one of the film’s highlights. The Countess and Mark’s girlfriend, played by Karen Kopins, (acting wise she’s terrible in this film, but she’s drop dead gorgeous so I’ll let her off) strut their dancing moves to win Mark’s affection, but he ends up joining in and it turns into something straight out of Grease – will Sandy get her man?
once bitten, film, jim carrey, vampires,
It is very difficult not to enjoy a film where, during a sexual encounter, one character asks the other, “Have you got any protection?” and the guy pulls out a rubber glove. Equally, when Mark, having begun the vampire transformation, goes to a fancy dress Halloween dance and everyone thinks he’s dressed up as a vampire yet he proclaims: “I’m Not Wearing A Costume!”. Or when his girlfriend goes to the school’s librarian to seek help overcoming her undead nemesis – it’s extremely funny watching a guy say: ‘”Goodness gracious. You know, it is most unfortunate the shocking reputation that vampires are having these days”, with an accent that is part David Letterman, part Apu out of The Simpsons.
Other films might do a similar thing with more finesse (Fright Night, The Lost Boys) but there’s something remarkably quirky about Once Bitten. And while it might be a flawed film, it has enough up its sleeve to warrant a viewing.

Jim Carrey’s PIERRE PIERRE Has Life Again

jim-carrey
There are reports that the comedy Pierre Pierre starring Jim Carrey with Larry Charles directing is back on thanks to the help of Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited production company.  The comedy, about a self-indulgent Frenchman who plans on stealing the Mona Lisa to get enough money to move out of his parent’s house, will start shooting this summer.
Previous director Jason Reitman had dropped out leaving the movie up in the air.  Screen Daily reports that the movie is back on with a budget of $30M versus the $20M when Reitman was involved due to supporting cast talks.  We like Jim Carrey around here; most of his projects that are not aimed at kids can get people talking, the man does good work.
